As digital technology rapidly advances, museum exhibit designs are evolving to incorporate interactive experiences. Utilizing digital interactions and multimedia, these new design forms bring exhibits to life. I have chosen to focus on Chinese music—an integral part of Chinese philosophy—using the "Heaven-Earth Harmony" concept from the "Book of Rites." Through interactive art installations featuring musical figurines from Tang dynasty tombs in Chayang Village, I explore the deep meanings of classical Chinese music.

Tang Dynasty tomb music figurines in Chayang Village

Six musical figurines have been unearthed from Tang dynasty tombs in Chayang Village, Xi'an, Shaanxi. These figurines are adorned in round-neck robes and headscarves, with belts tied at the waist and plump cheeks. They are depicted either sitting cross-legged or kneeling. The instruments they hold include a Konghou, clappers, a transverse flute, a pan flute, a pipa, and a sheng.

Exhibited in the National Museum of China, these figurines are separated from viewers by a layer of glass, which can create a sense of distance and detachment. To counter this, I have meticulously hand-sculpted replicas of these diverse figurines, allowing visitors to closely observe and appreciate their detailed craftsmanship.

Installation Design

In my research, many visitors were curious about the names of the instruments held by the figurines, as well as the sounds they produce. Therefore, in my design, when visitors place different figurines on a performance platform, the installation will play corresponding music and display visualizations of the sounds.

The pipa masterpiece "House of Flying Daggers" uses music to depict intense ancient warfare. The composition is majestic and spirited, with a clear artistic image. Its visualization shows ink splattering in rhythm, evoking a city under dark, oppressive clouds.

Sheng: Peacock Flying Southeast

Sheng: Peacock Flying Southeast

The sheng piece "Peacock Flying Southeast" conveys intense emotions, celebrating the deep affection and rebellious spirit of an ancient couple. I designed its visualization to be more abstract, with layers of wireframes symbolizing the barriers to love. The breaking of these frames represents struggle and defiance, while their repetitive rotation symbolizes the cyclical tragedy of love.

Nature displays profound beauty without speaking, the seasons follow clear laws without debate, and all things have inherent order without explanation. Through my works, I hope to enable audiences to experience the unique allure of classical Chinese music culture and grasp the ancient philosophy of "Heaven-Earth Harmony" in their dialogue with the millennia-old Tang dynasty musical figurines.
